A soundtrack for a film yet to be made, White Nightie is a deep exploration of the cinematic sonifications of fear. Recorded by Artamonova at Massive Attack studio several years ago in the midst of a vibrant, eclectic, noisy Bristol scene, the album pays homage to past masters like Dario Argento and Goblin, John Carpenter, and Tobe Hooper without becoming a kitsch jaunt in nostalgia. Not content with reaching back into the past for sounds and approaches, Artamonova also deploys contemporary nods to noise and electroacoustic processing, producing a truly varied palette of sound. The album contains seven dramatic pieces (supplemented by a track of shimmering drone recorded during the same period) that narrate unseen events, with passages of solemn, foreboding elegance disintegrating into more abstract, noisy - even trippy - soundscapes. Equal parts lurking shadows, tense heartbeats, and blood red screams, White Nightie is a detailed, engrossing soundtrack to an extended nightmare.
