Brimming with dreamy swells, synth riffs, processed samples and arpeggios, “Cut Me Slack!” is a continuation of The Lovepools driving synthpop and indie rock sound first established with their previous single, “White Lies & Palm Trees”.
The brightly layered chorus vocals in “Cut Me Slack!” were mostly one-takes recorded in the band’s living room late at night after lead singer, Anthony Shea came home from seeing The Killers perform live at The Forum in Los Angeles. Bassist and backing vocalist, Aria Cruz contributed to the chorus and bridge vocals as well, suggesting there be a lot of layers.
“Cut Me Slack!” first started out mostly as an instrumental demo in Anthony’s bedroom. With only the basic chords and a verse written, Anthony asked Aria to try his hand at adding a chorus and then proceeded to show Aria the unfinished demo. With a sudden burst of inspiration, Aria immediately sung Anthony the song’s anthemic chorus on his first attempt. Weeks later, Aria wrote the bridge melody in the same fashion. In the bridge, Anthony chimed in the word, “Believers” which in one word describes the essence of the song.
